The Polypterus family is one of the oldest genus’ of fish out there! Relatives of this family have been discovered dating back to the Triassic period. These genus also has some incredible adaptations including a swim bladder that also works almost like a lung allowing it to survive outside of water for sometime. The ornate bichir is the largest of the "upper-jawed” group of polypterids.
