Our Picks

Tetraodon mbu
Sale Price: $180.00 Original Price: $250.00

The mbu puffer is one of our favorite freshwater puffer fish! It’s striking yellow and black pattern is a real showstopper. We love watching their little quirks from them to flitting and floating about the tank to them sharpen their teeth on clam shells.

Mbu puffers are considered to be a “peaceful” puffer but great care should be taken when considering tank-mates. They are shy by nature and tend to hide from/avoid larger fish than themselves. These puffers however have been noted to have their own individual personalities and develop relationships with their owners, which is rare for a fish.

Polypterus delhezi
from $95.00

The armored bichir has a striking black striped pattern along its grey body.

The Polypterus family is one of the oldest genus’ of fish out there! Relatives of this family have been discovered dating back to the Triassic period. These genus also has some incredible adaptations including a swim bladder that also works almost like a lung allowing it to survive outside of water for sometime. It should be noted though these fish have incredibly poor eyesight and is known to bump into tank fixtures and accidentally nip at other tank-mates.

These fish are relatively friendly, however they should not be in a tank with any fish that can potentially fit in their mouth. They are also known escape artists, make sure your tank has a secure covering to ensure they do not jump out.

We have been importing rope fish for the longest time. These eel-like fish are actually in the Polypteridae family making them related to bichirs! They also have a primitive lung-like organs in their body just like bichirs. These fish have a brownish-green color with a unique long body. They are naturally nocturnal, however if fed during the day they can eventually become active during the day.

Rope fish are relatively peaceful fish, however they are carnivores. It is recommended that rope fish are kept with other fish that cannot fit in their mouth. While their natural prey is different they can mistakenly eat small tank-mates. Additionally these fish love to jump - make sure the tank has a secure covering to ensure they stay inside the tank.

Gnathonemus petersii
$26.00

The elephant nose fish is one of the most unique fish in the hobby. Their “trunk” (which is their most defining characteristic) is used to prod for food in riverbeds. It is essential to have sand (or soft substrate) at the bottom of their tank in order for them to continue this behavior. Additionally these fish can both produce and recognize electric fields. They use this to effectively travel in their natural habitat’s murky water and to recognize surrounding fish in their area. Mormyrids (which include the elephant nose fish) have large brains and has similar processing power as the human brain. Because of this, these fish are the subject of study in academia.

Elephant nose fish are relatively peaceful however they are territorial toward their own species and do not mix well with other Mormyrids. It is recommended to either keep one or 5 plus (in a tank large enough) otherwise the weaker fish will be outcompeted by stronger fish. Please note they are sensitive to water and environment changes like other scaleless fish.
